John Holland

Host of:
88 Jazz Place Weekend [Sunday 3pm-5pm]

John's interest in music goes way back, before the days of MTV and its devastating effect on musical diversity. As a child, he was lucky enough to have musical parents who gave him mostly classical music to listen to (Bach and Chopin were favorites). Inevitably, he was sidetracked by the rather bland 'pop' music of the 1980's but thankfully discovered the Beatles in high school, then the Grateful Dead in college, and his journey towards musical self-realization began anew.

These days, John sees only two types of music in the world - good, and bad. His musical activities now include the occasional performance in the jazz/rock/bluegrass idioms, field recording of live performances (always with the artist's permission), and spinning discs two hours every Sunday at WDNA. Of the time he spends in the on-air studio, he states, "it's as much for myself as it is for our listeners, or the artists I support. I'm trying to evolve, to learn as much as possible about all these great artists and their legacies. If I don't learn something new each week, about an artist or a tune that I didn't know previously, then I've failed in that task."
