WDNA 88.9FM Public Radio receives Knight Foundation Challenge Grant for its second Miami Downtown Jazz Festival!

(December 5, 2017) Miami, Florida –WDNA 88.9FM, Miami’s only radio source for prime time jazz is the proud recipient of a Knight Foundation Challenge Grant, an award that will help to make Miami a world-class destination for jazz.

The annual challenge grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's Knight Arts Challenge funds the best ideas for bringing South Florida together through the arts and WDNA was awarded the grant specifically to produce its second annual Miami Downtown Jazz Festival. This two-day event scheduled for April 27 – 28, 2018 will feature local and internationally acclaimed jazz artists at four Downtown Miami concert venues, culminating with the Grand Finale at Bayfront Park Amphitheatre.

The $100,000 grant will expand the Miami Downtown Jazz Festival with jazz piano and festival poster competitions and a jazz jam session.

The inaugural 2017 edition of the Miami Downtown Jazz Festival drew over 5,000 fans and attracted media outlets from out of town.  This upcoming festival will have increased marketing activities, particularly on a national level, thereby fulfilling one of its primary objectives – to make Miami a world-class jazz destination and attract more visitors to our beautiful city.

Most of the concerts that are scheduled will be free and open to the public, and a tentative list of top-self musicians, including NEA Jazz Master Dr. Lonnie Smith and the great Arturo Sandoval, is currently being finalized.  The business community will also benefit from the festival through a variety of sponsorship opportunities, including on-site exposure.
