Short Notice, the auspicious debut CD by Miami-born saxophonist Manny Echazabal, is a fun post-bop ride that reveals compositional ingeniousness and an adventurous side that draws from Wayne Shorter and Michael Brecker, but still brandishing a valid signature of its own.  Felipe Freitas, Jazz Trail

Echazabal is a tenor saxophonist who plays in a post-bop/free-bop genre and is not afraid to reach outside the structure and tempo. The reach is successful… This is the complete package. Robert Rusch, Cadence Magazine/Papatamus

Manny Echazabal is a native of Miami and graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Studio Music and Jazz Performance in 2014. He began playing alto sax in middle school, and by the time he got to high school, he was good enough to join the school’s band. A teacher encouraged him to learn other instruments, and he soon became proficient on the tenor sax, flute and clarinet. The university gave him the opportunity to perform in different sized bands and ensembles, including the Frost Concert Jazz Band under the direction of John Daversa. Even before attending the university, he spent a lot of time listening to artists like Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, and Kenny Dorham, and was drawn to the small jazz combo setting.

After graduation, Echazabal became a mainstay in local clubs, developing his chops and building a reputation as a new voice on the scene. He was soon invited to perform in several jazz and music festivals, including the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, Festival Miami, Coconut Grove Arts Festival, the Next Generation Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, The

Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival, The Litchfield Jazz Festival, and the Wynwood Life Festival. Known as both a bandleader and a composer, two of his compositions, “Unknown Identity” and “Spt,” won Downbeat’s award for Outstanding Small Group Performance.

Manny Echazabal is a musician who is deeply in touch with his inner-life. He has a huge heart and plays with a passion that is infectious. SHORT NOTICE is a stunning debut for this young artist who, along with his fellow musicians, has brought an esteemed jazz tradition into the 21st century. This album clearly shows that the post-bop jazz tradition continues to inspire young musicians who are not afraid to tackle the hybrid styles, including bebop, blues, R&B, and black gospel music, that the genre encompasses.
