Joel Siegel of the Washington City Paper described Dena DeRose as "The most creative and compelling singer-pianist since Shirley Horn." That's quite a statement, but no one has ever argued with that opinion and it's easy to concur when you experience the virtuosity that Dena delivers to her audiences.
Adept as a singer and pianist, Dena is rare talent who's internationally acclaimed. She's recorded over a dozen albums as a leader and performed with a slew of jazz greats including Ray Brown, Clark Terry, Marian McPartland, Benny Golson, John Scofield, Benny Green, Ray Drummond, Phil Woods, David €'˜Fathead' Newman, Rufus Reid, Jay Clayton, Mark Murphy, among others.
She's won multiple awards including Downbeat's Critic's Poll. All About Jazz anointed her as a "Jazz Artist of the Year" in 2003, and "Best Jazz Album" of 2007. She's performed at just about all the major international jazz festivals and she now comes to the WDNA Jazz Gallery for what will undoubtedly be an unforgettable performance.
"The Live Musician," by Anthony Harris
The event also features an exhibition by photographer Anthony Harris titled, "The Live Musician." An avid jazz fan and music enthusiast, Anthony Harris routinely captures performers 'in the moment.' His images offer candid glimpses of his subjects from angles often unaccessible to audiences. Among the artists included in this collection are Ron Carter, Caetano Veloso, Lisa Ficher, Aldo Salvent, and others.
